Psyllium intake may improve glucose control in adults

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Psyllium husk may help people improve blood sugar control when used regularly as part of their diet. The fiber comes from the Plantago ovata plant and absorbs water inside the digestive system. This creates a gel that can slow digestion and carbohydrate absorption. Clinical studies have linked that process with smaller glucose rises after meals. Research also shows improvements in fasting blood sugar and HbA1c among some people with impaired glucose control or type 2 diabetes.

Clinical research links psyllium with lower fasting glucose and improved HbA1c markers.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 19 randomized controlled trials involving 962 adults. Researchers, including scientists from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, compared psyllium supplementation with placebo or control treatments. Psyllium reduced fasting blood sugar by an average of 6.89 mg/dL. HbA1c declined by 0.75 percentage points across the pooled studies. Researchers also reported an improvement in HOMA-IR, which measures insulin resistance. The analysis did not find a statistically significant reduction in circulating insulin levels.

The findings also showed that dose and treatment duration can affect results. Fasting blood sugar improved across several psyllium dose ranges. However, studies lasting fewer than 50 days did not produce a significant fasting-glucose reduction in subgroup analysis. HbA1c did not improve significantly at doses below 10 grams per day. A tablespoon of psyllium may approach that amount, although product weights can differ. Consumers should check nutrition labels instead of assuming every tablespoon contains the same dose.

Benefits appear stronger with elevated blood sugar

Earlier clinical evidence found greater effects among people who already had problems controlling blood glucose. A meta-analysis of 35 randomized studies found the largest reductions among participants receiving treatment for type 2 diabetes. In those studies, psyllium taken before meals lowered fasting glucose by an average 37 mg/dL. HbA1c dropped by 0.97 percentage points. Researchers found little glucose-lowering effect among people with normal blood sugar. Participants with prediabetes showed smaller improvements than those with diabetes.

Another randomized clinical trial studied 40 adults with type 2 diabetes over eight weeks. Participants in the intervention group consumed about 10.5 grams of soluble psyllium fiber each day. Researchers reported improvements in fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin and insulin resistance. The study involved a small group, so larger pooled research provides stronger evidence. Current findings support psyllium as a dietary tool that may complement established diabetes management. They do not show that psyllium should replace prescribed treatment.

    Safe use requires enough fluid

Psyllium absorbs a large amount of water, making proper preparation important. The U.S. National Library of Medicine advises mixing psyllium powder or granules with at least 8 ounces, or about 240 milliliters, of liquid. People should drink the mixture promptly after preparation. Some users may experience gas, bloating or other digestive discomfort when they increase fiber intake quickly. Insufficient fluid can also create swallowing problems or raise the risk of intestinal obstruction in susceptible people.

Psyllium can also affect how the body absorbs or responds to some medicines. People who use prescription drugs should check with a doctor or pharmacist before adding regular psyllium supplementation. This guidance has added importance for people taking medicines to control blood sugar. Psyllium may support glucose management, but it does not replace diabetes medication, monitoring or professional care. Regular physical activity, an appropriate diet and consistent medical follow-up remain central parts of long-term blood sugar management.
